2013 Bike to China Program!
By Kyle Tsukahira
APIOPA is proud to announce the launch of the first ever Bike to China (BTC) program! Bike to China is a health promotion and social advocacy project that combines team physical exercise with dialogue and training on understanding urban planning. The project aims to promote physical activity among Asian Pacific Islander (API) youth while educating them on the importance of exploring how space is used in their local community and ways to advocate for a voice in how their neighborhood should/could look. The goal of the project is to bike a total of 5,000 miles as a team, which is roughly the distance from Chinatown, Los Angeles, to China.
The program began in the last half of May and will continue until the beginning of August. So far the group of 16 youth have biked a total of 1,284 miles! The youth have had the opportunity to go through maintenance/repair workshops with a local bicycle co-op called Bici Libre, learn how to ride properly and safely thanks to Andres Rodriguez from Multicultural Communities for Mobility (MCM), ride along the L.A. River, experience the rush of Ciclavia, learn what bicycle friendly infrastructure looks like and means for communities in Long Beach, and join Bike SGV on their monthly San Gabriel Valley bicycle train ride along the Emerald Necklace.
